Car hire

Just after eight in a rental yard in Windhoek. Someone from the company folds the rooftop tent open and shut again, then the two of you walk round the truck and note every dent.

It takes an hour. And it is the hour in which you learn most about your contract. Which vehicle you need depends on your route, not on how it looks in photos. Most of your trip will be on gravel: the Roads Authority counts only about 17 per cent of its network as tarred, and the Road Fund Administration puts the share without a sealed surface at 90 per cent.

The companies differ less on price than in the small print. Whether your cover pays out after a rollover is written differently in every contract.

Where you really need a 4x4

In a few places, but well-known ones. The first is the sand between the 2x4 car park and Sossusvlei, the last five kilometres before Deadvlei. With a 4x4 you can drive it yourself. Without one you switch to a shuttle at the 2x4 car park. NWR quotes N$ 180 for it, a travel site N$ 250 per adult for the concessionaire's shuttle (as of May 2026). These may be two different services.

Access has not always been certain. In December 2025 the concessionaire announced that self-drivers would no longer be allowed past the 2x4 car park, then postponed the plan after protests. On 1 May 2026 the ban was enforced for a single day; on 2 May the environment ministry lifted it. One blog claimed in September 2026 that the restriction still applied, while every other source says the opposite. Ask at the gate in Sesriem. The drive there is covered in the Windhoek to Sesriem stage.

The second is the north-west. Even a car hire broker advises a 4x4 for remote areas such as the Kaokoveld. Asco goes further: on Van Zyl's Pass and the D3707 and D3703 you pay for every bit of damage yourself, even with its highest level of cover. If you are heading for Opuwo and further north, read that clause twice.

The third changes with the rain. In April 2026, after flooding, the C12 between Grünau and Fish River Canyon was reported passable only by 4x4. One guidebook recommends high ground clearance for the gravel roads to the canyon anyway; see the Keetmanshoop to Fish River Canyon stage.

And the rest? A broker describes the gravel roads as easy enough at a sensible speed. A small car in Windhoek costs a fraction: a comparison site showed a VW Polo Vivo from €21 a day (as of October 2026). It lacks the ground clearance of a pickup, though. And neither Asco nor Bushlore pays for underbody damage under basic cover.

Rooftop tent or lodges

A rooftop-tent 4x4 is a camp on wheels: tent on the roof, camping kit in the back, at Savanna for example in a drawer system. You sleep at campsites. Wild camping is not allowed, the Britz contract for one says so. What park campsites charge per night is on the costs page.

At Sesriem the location counts more than the tent. The campsite lies inside the inner gate, which opens an hour before sunrise for guests staying inside. The same applies to Sossus Dune Lodge and Dead Valley Lodge, though. If you sleep in lodges and on guest farms, you do not need a rooftop tent, only a vehicle that suits your route. Ask the company for the same model without camping gear.

On two large German car hire comparison sites, a 4x4 with rooftop tent could not be selected as such in October 2026, and one of them tells you to ask the rental company. Campervan portals list 4x4 campers from Windhoek, including Asco's. Whether you get a rooftop tent or a fixed camper body only shows in the vehicle description.

Rental companies compared

Three companies publish their 2026 terms in enough detail to set them side by side. Britz and Asco rent from Windhoek; Bushlore is based in Johannesburg and has a depot in Windhoek.

Terms as published: Britz valid 1 November 2025 to 31 October 2026, Asco dated 1 June 2026, Bushlore 2026. The rand is pegged one to one to the Namibian dollar.

Several other Windhoek companies keep their terms less public. Savanna Car Hire gives 1994 as its founding year on its website and a fleet of over 200 vehicles, including 4x4s with camping equipment. Namibia2go rents Hilux campers with rooftop tents for up to four people and publishes daily rates. With both, get the excess and exclusions in writing before you book.

All seven rental companies side by side, with minimum age, excess, border rules and sample rates: rental companies compared.

Insurance: what the excess does not cover

There is no single figure for the excess. Depending on the source it is N$ 5,000 to 15,000 or around N$ 28,000, and renters on a forum quoted roughly €2,500 to €3,000 in 2020 and 2021. Bushlore writes R 30,000 into its terms, as of October 2026. An average of those numbers is no use to you; only the figure in your contract is.

The gaps matter more. An accident with no other party involved, above all a rollover on gravel, is what contracts most often leave out. Britz excludes rollovers even under Super Cover, including tipping onto the side. Asco pays for a single-vehicle accident only with Super Cover. Bushlore doubles the excess, and the same rule applies there to hitting an animal at night.

Water damage is excluded by all three. Asco explicitly bans driving through rivers, flooded sections or wet salt pans and calls water damage negligence. Add underbody damage, sand damage at Britz, sandblasting at Asco, and driving on dunes, which Asco and Bushlore forbid.

Then there is speed. Asco sets 80 km/h on gravel, even where a sign allows more. If damage is linked to excess speed, you are fully liable there, whatever level of cover you bought. Britz can recall the car if tracking shows repeated speeding. Germany's Federal Foreign Office warns that with some companies cover lapses after even a minor speeding offence. One Windhoek company also excludes driving after sunset outside towns without permission.

Watch outChoose your level of cover by the single-vehicle accident clause, not by price. No rollover cover? Then the worst case is the whole vehicle on your bill. How to drive gravel so it never comes to that is on the practical tips page.

Border crossings and one-way hire

No hire car leaves Namibia without the company's written permission. Britz charges N$ 1,000 per rental for the permit and wants the paperwork seven days ahead; a travel blog quoted about N$ 445 at another company in July 2026. Britz rules out Kenya, Angola, Malawi and Tanzania entirely. At the border you pay a road levy in cash, about R 220 for a car according to an undated source. As of October 2026.

One-way rentals are not cheap. According to its terms as of October 2026, Britz charges a one-off N$ 7,000 for Windhoek to Cape Town or Johannesburg, payable on collection. Asco quotes one-way rentals only on request. If you pick up in South Africa and drive into Namibia, Bushlore charges a single R 800 cross-border fee however many borders follow. Coming back into Namibia you show your visa again; it normally allows multiple entries.

What a 4x4 with rooftop tent costs per day

Season makes the biggest difference, and every company draws its own boundaries. At Asco the Hilux camper for one or two people, rented for six to 15 days, costs almost twice as much from mid-July to mid-August as in January.

Period 2026Asco Hilux camper, per day
1 January to 14 March€110
15 March to 14 July€127
15 July to 14 August€205
15 August to 14 November€179
15 November to 31 December€117

As of October 2026. The Land Cruiser there costs €142 in the cheapest period and €267 in the most expensive. Namibia2go prices in Namibian dollars: its Hilux camper for up to four with a basic rooftop tent cost N$ 2,640 a day until 30 June 2026 and N$ 3,520 from 1 July 2026 to the end of October. Ask them directly for rates from November 2026.

For comparison, a travel blog put a 4x4 with rooftop tent at €100 to €130 a day as of July 2026, a comparison site at €100 to €200 as of June 2025. Asco rents from six days, Bushlore usually from seven. What hire, fuel and camping add up to over two or three weeks is on the costs page.

Collecting the car in Windhoek

Bushlore's terms say the handover is only complete once you are comfortable with the vehicle and its equipment. Take that literally. Have them show you the rooftop tent until you can put it up and pack it away on your own, and how to engage four-wheel drive: Asco does not pay for damage caused by using it wrongly. Your signature confirms the condition of the vehicle, including any dent that is not on the checklist.

Check the wheel-changing tools and the tyres, as Bushlore itself recommends. Asco hands the car over with a full tank and expects it back full, and the airport transfer is included in its rates. At Asco there is also a black box in the car that you must not touch, and you sign a second damage report on return.

Our tipPhotograph the car from every side at handover, plus windscreen, tyres and as much of the underside as you can see. Time-stamped photos on your phone count for more at return than your memory.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a 4x4 to drive in Namibia?

Not everywhere. In Namibia you need four-wheel drive for the last five kilometres of sand to Sossusvlei unless you take the shuttle, for the tracks of the Kaokoveld, and after heavy rain on some roads such as the C12 to Fish River Canyon. On the other gravel roads, ground clearance matters more.

Can I drive my own hire car to Deadvlei?

Yes. With a 4x4 you may drive the sand track to the 4x4 car park at Sossusvlei and Deadvlei yourself. A ban on self-drivers was enforced for one day on 1 May 2026 and lifted by the environment ministry on 2 May. Without a 4x4 you take the shuttle from the 2x4 car park. As of October 2026.

Does car hire insurance in Namibia cover a rollover?

Often not, or only in part. Britz excludes rollovers even under its zero-excess cover, Asco covers a single-vehicle accident only with its top level, Super Cover, and Bushlore doubles the excess. Read the single-vehicle accident clause before you book.

Can I take a Namibian hire car into Botswana or South Africa?

Yes, but only with the rental company's written permission and a cross-border permit, which costs extra. Britz wants the paperwork a week ahead and does not allow its cars into Kenya, Angola, Malawi or Tanzania at all. At the border you also pay a road levy in cash.

How old do you have to be to hire a 4x4 in Namibia?

It depends on the company. Bushlore rents from age 22, Britz from 23 with a surcharge under 25, and Asco asks for 23, 25 or 30 depending on vehicle group and engine size. As of October 2026.
