The B4 runs from Aus to Lüderitz and is tarred all the way, so the 124 kilometres take an hour and a half to two hours. Between Aus and Lüderitz the road crosses the Sperrgebiet, the diamond area along the coast. You may only stop at the marked places. Fill up in Aus, or at the latest in Lüderitz.
After 20 to 25 kilometres, depending on the source, you reach the Garub viewpoint with its hide. This is home to the wild horses of the Namib. Around 2012 there were 286. Then spotted hyenas cut the herd to about 70. Since the ministry removed some hyenas in 2019, foals have been growing up again. Drive carefully on this stretch: travellers warned of horses grazing on the B4 as far back as 2019.
The Sperrgebiet is now the Tsau //Khaeb National Park. It includes the ghost town of Kolmanskop, which is worth a morning of its own. Tours run in the morning; check prices and times on the spot, as of October 2026.
Our tipGive yourself time at Garub. You cannot plan whether horses will be at the waterhole, so bring binoculars and some patience.
