You start on the C27 and turn onto the C19 to Solitaire after twelve kilometres. Fill up there even if the gauge still shows half a tank: the fuel station at the state-run camp in Sesriem ran dry several times in 2025, and more than 230 kilometres of gravel separate Solitaire from Walvis Bay. The bakery Solitaire is known for sits at the junction of the C19 and C14.
Beyond Solitaire the road climbs. The C14 crosses the Gaub and Kuiseb canyons, and its steepest gradient, 1 in 9, is on the Kuiseb Pass, where some bends have no guard rail. Take it slowly. Between the two passes, signs on both sides of the road mark the Tropic of Capricorn. After that the land turns flat and pale all the way to Walvis Bay. The last 26 kilometres to Swakopmund are on the tarred B2.
Allow five to six hours of actual driving for the 350 kilometres. More than 300 of them are gravel, where rental contracts set their own limits, 80 or even 60 km/h depending on the company, even where a sign says 100. In February 2026 travellers reported the C14 freshly graded and in very good shape. After heavy rain the Kuiseb River can flood the pass; on 27 March 2026 it was closed for a day. An environmental assessment for tarring the road from Walvis Bay to Maltahöhe has been on file since 2025. Plan on gravel all the same, as of October 2026.
Our tipLeave early and plan a break in Solitaire. With photo stops at the passes and the Tropic sign, five hours of driving easily turns into a full day.
